This group of succulents are native to the tropical regions of East
Africa, and their flower colors range from white, off white, and pink to
red. These warm climate plants grow well in low light and can live as
house plants if water is given and with held in the correct seasons. Many
varieties will rot easily if they are over watered and this gives them the
reputation of being difficult to grow as house plants. Basically, they
like plenty of water in the growing seasons when they have leaves, and
then they need to be kept dry while they are in their winter rest cycle.
For succulents they are more like deciduous trees, because they have a
leaf season and a period of rest when they lose their leaves. Some species
can grow as large as small trees in their native habitats, but as house
plants it is unlikely for them to ever become that big. Most of them grow
as upright or prostrate stems, and many of them have beautiful geometric
pattern in the way their stems grow.
